Abstract
James D. McCabe, Jr. (1842-1883) was a Confederate supporter and a popular writer of more than 30 works including histories, biographies, and plays. The collection consists of letterbooks, unpublished manuscripts, and photographs dating from 1862 to 1881.

Abstract
William Churchill, philologist, ethnologist, and writer, was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1859. He was appointed United States consul-general to Samoa (1896-1899) where he pursued his interest in philology and ethnology. Churchill also studied African languages and culture but less seriously than those of Polynesia.
